  • Significant weight gain or loss

Flatten Your Abdomen

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and tissue from the abdomen, as well as tighten the underlying abdominal musculature. A tummy tuck is a safe, highly popular way to transform a sagging or bulging abdomen into a more flat, attractive contour. Dr. John Michael Quinn performs every tummy tuck with an eye for what will be most flattering and natural-looking for a patient's body. The incision is made fairly low so that the resulting scar will be as discreet as possible. After the incision is made, Dr. Quinn removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen, shaping a pleasing contour for your new figure. He also tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall to enhance your new, toned appearance. He then closes and bandages the incision. You might be asked to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and speed your recovery.

Ideal Candidates

Who are Ideal Candidates for a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is not intended to be used as a weight loss solution. Instead, it is best performed on patients who are within thirty pounds of their goal weight and have stubborn abdominal fat that refuses to respond to diet or exercise. Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are at a stable weight and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. A tummy tuck is an excellent way for both men and women to contour their abdomen into a flat, attractive shape. Patients who have lax or sagging abdominal skin are good candidates for a tummy tuck.

Individuals with bulging or flabby stomachs that refuse to tone up with exercise are also good candidates for a tummy tuck. It's is a common procedure for women who would like to help their body bounce back from childbirth. We advise our patients to finish having children before receiving their tummy tuck in order to see their best, long-term results. Ideal candidates are non-smokers who do not have any pre-existing health conditions that could interfere with their body's ability to heal. It is also recommended that patients maintain optimistic but realistic expectations of the outcomes achievable with any cosmetic body-modifying procedure.

Expert Care

Consultation for Tummy Tuck Surgery

All consultations take place at our welcoming office in Overland Park, KS. From the frame of a patient's body to the way the patient heals from surgery, no two patients are quite the same. Your consultation with Dr. John Michael Quinn is not only your opportunity to have all your questions answered, but it is also a chance for Dr. Quinn to understand what treatment options will be best for your unique physique and aesthetic goals. Once Dr. Quinn has examined your abdomen, he will work with you to tailor a unique treatment plan to the needs of your body. If you have questions about any other body contouring procedures, we invite you to ask them at this time. Along with the desire to have a tummy tuck performed, health must also be considered to determine qualification for such a procedure. Dr. Quinn will need to go over your medical history, medication use, previous surgery history, and overall lifestyle habits with you to verify your candidacy for a tummy tuck. In light of this, we encourage patients to schedule a complimentary consultation at Quinn Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center to discuss their specific needs with Dr. Quinn.

Complementary Procedures

During this time of self-improvement, we invite our tummy tuck patients to take advantage of the many non-invasive services and products offered at Quinn Aesthetic Center. Our highly-trained and friendly aestheticians offer treatment options such as microdermabrasion, Thermage skin therapy, and laser hair removal to help you look and feel your best. Some of our patients also take the opportunity to sculpt multiple parts of their body in one procedure, achieving their ideal body contouring outcomes in one comprehensive session. Patients commonly combine liposuction of the flanks or thighs to improve their body contour overall. Many women decide to receive a Mommy Makeover, which can involve a combination of a tummy tuck, liposuction of the flanks, back, buttocks, or thighs, and a breast lift or augmentation.

Your Kansas City Tummy Tuck at Quinn Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center

Most tummy tuck procedures at Quinn Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center are performed under general anesthesia. Your tummy tuck will be completed within one to two hours, depending on the extent of work you will be receiving. Your abdomen will be sterilized at the beginning of your tummy tuck procedure. Dr. Quinn will make a singular incision low in the abdomen, which will run horizontally between your hip bones. This incision is made low enough so that it will be easily concealed by clothing or swimwear. If patients have a large amount of excess skin around their belly button, Dr. Quinn may also make an additional incision around the belly button.

Additional Reading

Dr. Quinn will tighten and repair your abdominal muscles. Next, excess tissue and fat will be removed from your upper and lower abdomen. If liposuction will be performed during your tummy tuck, a minuscule cannula will be inserted into the targeted area. Tumescent fluid will be introduced into the site, which will help to gently break down and remove your stubborn fat. Tumescent liposuction will also help Dr. Quinn contour and shape your flanks and abdominal area to your desired appearance. Depending on the extent of work required to achieve your desired results, the belly button may be repositioned during your procedure.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

What is the Recovery Time for a Tummy Tuck?

Patients will be monitored following their tummy tuck by our staff to assure their safe recovery from the anesthesia. Once a patient is approved for release, a friend or family member will need to drive them home. You will receive individualized recovery instructions before your tummy tuck, but Dr. Quinn and his staff will be available to answer questions you may have, at any time. Most patients will need to take between one to two weeks off work to recover from their tummy tuck. Post-procedure bruising and swelling are not uncommon. You will be given a compression garment to wear to help reduce these conditions. Patients who receive drainage tubes will also receive instructions for the care of these drains.

Short, intermittent walks are recommended, even during the first week of your recovery period. It can take up to six weeks to see a major reduction in any bruising and swelling, with results that continue to improve over the next few months. The majority of swelling will be healed within four months. You will receive instructions regarding best scar care practices, which will help the scar from your tummy tuck heal well and inconspicuously. As your swelling reduces and the outcomes of your tummy tuck settle into place, you will see more and more improvement in the flat, attractive contour of your stomach.
