The Ins and Outs of Breast Augmentation Surgery

The Ins and Outs of Breast Augmentation Surgery

In Kansas City, Breast Augmentation Surgery has been a trend that continues to rise as more women seek the expertise of skilled plastic surgeons to achieve their desired look. It has been a sought-after procedure for women looking to enhance their physical appearance and boost their self-confidence.

Understanding Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to increase the size, shape, or fullness of the breasts. This is typically achieved through the insertion of implants. The primary reasons women opt for breast augmentation include:

  • Enhancing breast size: Many women choose this surgery to increase the size of naturally small breasts.
  • Restoring breast volume: Breast augmentation can restore volume lost due to weight loss, pregnancy, or aging.
  • Achieving symmetry: It can correct asymmetrical breasts, creating a more balanced appearance.
  • Boosting confidence: For many, the procedure significantly improves self-esteem and body image.

Steps to Take Before Surgery

Undergoing any type of surgery can seem overwhelming, and the same goes for plastic surgery. It is important to feel confident and well informed every step of the way. From choosing your surgeon, to post operative care, every detail matters.

Consultation

The journey begins with a consultation with a qualified Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. During this meeting, the surgeon will discuss the patient's goals, medical history, and perform a physical examination. This is also the time for a patient to ask the surgeon any questions about the breast augmentation procedure, and try on sample breast implants.

Scheduling Surgery

At Quinn Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center, when a patient chooses to move forward with surgery, she will schedule her surgery date, as well as a date to come in for a preoperative visit. A Patient Care Coordinator will assist her every step of the way to ensure each patient has everything she needs to move forward with her breast augmentation surgery in Kansas City.

Breast Augmentation Preoperative Visit

This is a very exciting time for each patient—choosing the implant size and type. Dr. John Michael Quinn uses Mentor Breast Implants, both saline and silicone, with a variety of “profile types” for each patient to choose from.

When a patient visits for her preoperative visit, a patient care coordinator will assist with the “trying on” process to determine the best size for her. This appointment will also be the final appointment prior to surgery, so coming prepared with questions is very important!

Anesthesia During Surgery

On the day of the surgery, the patient will be given anesthesia to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. The surgery is done under general anesthesia, and is overseen by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and Nurse Anesthetists.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

Incisions

The three most common incision sites include the inframammary fold (under the breast), periareolar (around the nipple), and transaxillary (in the armpit). Dr. Quinn’s preferred technique is the transaxillary breast augmentation—the incision is hidden in the underarm. This helps reduce any visible scarring.

Implant Insertion

The chosen implants are then inserted into a pocket created by Dr. Quinn. His preferred placement of the breast implant is called a “subpectoral placement” (below the muscle), also known as the biplanar technique. The implant is then placed in a device called the Keller Funnel, which allows for a safe, sterile and efficient way to slide the implant into place.

Closing the Incisions

Once the implants are securely in place, the incisions are closed with layered sutures in the skin and surgical tape to cover the skin.

Recovery

The patient will be monitored closely after the surgery and given specific instructions for recovery at home. This includes guidelines on caring for the breasts, medications to apply or take orally, and follow-up appointments with the surgeon.

Recovery Process

Recovery from breast augmentation surgery is a crucial phase that requires careful attention to ensure optimal results and minimize complications:

  • Immediate Post-Operative Care: Patients may experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the first few days following surgery. Pain management is typically achieved with prescribed medications.
  • First Week: Rest is essential during the first week, and physical activity should be limited. Patients are usually advised to begin gentle ROM (range of motion) exercises to aid healing and minimize swelling.
  • Weeks 2-6: Gradual resumption of activities is encouraged, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided. Attending follow-up visits with Dr. John M Quinn and his team are crucial for the recovery and healing so they can closely monitor progress.
  • Long-Term Care: While most patients feel comfortable returning to work and normal activities after a few weeks, complete recovery can take several months. It’s important to follow the surgeon’s advice on scar care and to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.

Choosing the Right Kansas City Plastic Surgeon

Selecting a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon in Kansas City is paramount to achieving the best possible outcome. Here are some tips to consider:

  • Board Certification: Ensure the surgeon is board-certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This certification indicates that the surgeon has undergone rigorous training and adheres to high standards of practice.
  • Experience and Specialization: Look for a surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation and has extensive experience performing the procedure. Reviewing before-and-after photos of previous patients can provide insight into their expertise.
  • Patient Reviews and Testimonials: Reading reviews and testimonials from former patients can offer valuable perspectives on the surgeon’s skills and patient care.
  • Personal Comfort: It’s essential to feel comfortable and confident with the surgeon. A good surgeon will listen to your goals, answer your questions, and provide honest recommendations.
  • Facility Accreditation: The surgical facility should be accredited and adhere to strict safety standards. This ensures a safe environment for the procedure.
