Recovering After Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast reconstruction is a procedure that can help restore your confidence, self-esteem, and the appearance and feel of breasts that have been removed with a single or double mastectomy.

The time it takes you to recover from breast reconstruction varies depending on the type of reconstruction you have. In most cases, you’ll spend about two weeks recovering from implant surgery, and several weeks recovering from a flap procedure, which is when your breasts are rebuilt using skin, fat, and muscle tissue from another part of your body.

If you’re considering breast reconstruction, your plastic surgeon can talk with you in more detail about what to expect from recovery at the time of your initial consultation.

In the meantime, here are key points to keep in mind throughout your recovery from breast reconstruction.

Bruising, Swelling, And Scar Tissue

Bruising and swelling usually go away at about eight weeks following surgery. Be patient, and understand that it may take some time to see your final results.

Scar tissue can take up to two years to fade following breast reconstruction. Scars may never go away completely, but their prominence will continue to fade during the first few years after surgery.

Pay Attention To Post-Op Instructions

Closely adhere to your surgeon’s post-op instructions for optimal healing and recovery. Avoid engaging in sports, overhead lifting, and some sexual activities throughout recovery, and seek approval from your surgeon before engaging in intense physical activity.

Prepare For A Period Of Emotional Adjustment

Mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of facing emotional adjustment in the months and years following breast reconstruction. Some women find that they need time to adjust to reconstructed breasts following cancer and reconstruction. Mention your concerns to your plastic surgeon, and consider joining a breast cancer survivor support group to help you manage your emotions.

Discuss Mammograms With Your Surgeon

While it’s possible for women with reconstructed breasts to get mammograms, some experts agree that women who have had mastectomies may not need routine mammograms. However, if you have breast implants and need a mammogram, inform your technologist about your implants before starting the mammogram. This helps prevent photos from being impaired by implants.
